Advanced Manufacturing
Bringing cohesion to our manufacturing sector to build on strengths and develop opportunities
Cumbria’s economy is underpinned by an extensive manufacturing base which has seen steady growth to 13% of the county’s economy, supports 16,000 jobs and is influential in advanced technologies and specialist expertise.
Our manufacturing strengths focus on wood and paper products, support of engineering within energy, marine, and rubber, and an extensive food produce offer. The influence of key organisations like Pirelli, BAE Systems, Sellafield Ltd., Iggesund and Ørsted are driving a strong SME base and supply chain.
We will build on existing manufacturing strengths to access new opportunities so that the county becomes recognised as a leading location for advanced manufacturing industries, with a world-class research and development and innovation base.

Our aim is to enable new business by encouraging greater cohesion and collaboration within and across our sectors to grow new opportunities within Advanced Manufacturing. The sector is critically dependent on the skills and capabilities of our people, and our ability to access and implement innovation in digital and automation technologies to enhance our offer.
Cumbria can be at the forefront of new clean energy developments to contribute to Net Zero Carbon and climate change goals which can be secured with the support of a strong supply chain and manufacturing offer, and with the critical innovation needed to attract new energy projects.
With greater cohesion and collaboration between sector based supply chains and greater innovation capabilities and quality of our businesses, the aim is to attract key energy projects so that established clusters of supply chain and manufacturing businesses can deliver and grow new export opportunities.
